Notice improvement in value added by CIOs

I attended the June 21, 2007, meeting of the CIO Community of Practice, led by Ralph Boethling (CIOwerks [1]) and John Moran (Global Gateways [2]).  A key element of the meeting was “View of CIO role – CEO, CFO, COO, HR panel.”  The panel members were …

  • Guy Gecht, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman, Electronics For Imaging, Inc.

  • Dave Robbins, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BigFix

  • Stuart W. Booth, EVP, CFO & Secretary, Central Garden & Pet Company

  • Debbie Shotwell, Group Vice President, Human Resources and Talent, Taelo

There was considerable discussion – by and with the panelists.  Discussion continued after the panelists left.  I mentioned 6 potential roles for chief information officers, per my Computerworld Leadership Series article “Evaluating the CIO.” [3]

The meeting provided practical “how to” advice for and examples of CIOs functioning at reasonably above the “Transactions and Infrastructure”-only service levels evident over a span of years in many organizations.

I appreciate Ralph’s and John’s making it possible for me to attend.
